Common Boots Theatre continues its history of creating new Canadian theatre that reflects on who we are and our connections to each other, highlighting unique perspectives. We have a number of works currently in various phases of development and we hope to bring them to you soon. Post-pandemic, we are particularly interested in the nature of connection, whether it’s welcoming a new audience or community, or providing opportunities for us to spend quality time together. We are also currently interested in new work that welcomes a broad audience, and that is easy to tour and remount, as well as work that explores our relationship to the natural world.

We also continue to partner with other theatre companies and organizations to present projects that we believe should be seen by more and wider audiences. These are decided on a case-by-case basis depending on resources and capacity of our team.

If you would like to support the development of new Canadian work that aligns with our values, please consider making a tax-deductible donation HERE.

Plant Show

Created and performed by Alexandra Montagnese and Derek Kwan

This family-oriented show, where living plants are transformed into puppets in a greenhouse setting, will delight audiences as we tap into the zany and hilarious secret lives of plants. Its unique blend of puppetry and environmental education engages audiences of all ages. This project reinforces our dedication to nurturing creativity and environmental stewardship within our community. Audiences get an opportunity to make and take home their own plant puppet.

Cocoon

Created and performed by Heather Marie Annis and Derek Kwan

This clown/physical theatre performance piece for very young audiences (under 5) was initiated through the WeeFestival and follows the story of two emerging butterflies learning about change, anxiety/fear, movement and friendship. Through play and music, audiences will learn gentle strategies on how to deal with fear and the unknown. This piece is designed to be lightweight and tourable to both outdoor and indoor venues, allowing us to meet more audiences wherever they are.

The title "What Can You Learn From the Land You Are On?" in bulbous light-green text is over a background of dark green text. The background has various organic shapes in different shades of green

Polar Opposites

Directed by Jani Lauzon, performed by Thurga Kanagasekarampillai and Derek Kwan

This clown-based physical theatre piece explores the plight of two polar bears trapped on a shrinking iceberg. This adaptation with no language, based on Nicole Ratjen’s original play, is a collaboration with Deaf artist Thurga Kanagasekarampillai, director Jani Lauzon, and others. Through a world of gesture, play, and slapstick comedy, we invite the audience to experience firsthand the effects that we have on nature, and reflect on our own precarity on planet Earth.
